Frontwoman Katrina del Mar is best known as a photographer and underground filmmaker, often described as the lesbian Russ Meyer. But something about, well, everything, that’s gone on in recent years pushed her toward band formation. “I feel like we’re living through a collective PTSD nationally, just coming out of a federally abusive arranged marriage that very few of us wanted,” del Mar tells PureHoney in an interview. “So it’s like watching a riveting disaster film playing out in super slow motion.”
There’s a lot going on in Katrina Del Mar’s head. Take the time she was driving from a funeral in Louisville and passed a sign for a town called Tracy City. “I’ve never been there, but in my mind it’s a sad little place full of girls named Tracy, who are a combo of Ramona the Pest and a Riot Grrrl, full of adolescent longing and anger, ready to beat you up,” Del Mar says. “I thought it would be a great name for a band.” Now Del Mar fronts a combo named “Tracy City,” and it’s just the latest step in her artistic development. -Bob Krasner, AM New York / Manhattan Express
Del Mar is a lesbian photographer, artist, and filmmaker, whose work is distinguishable by its punk, experimental quality. If that’s not cool enough, she also fronts a garage rock band, Tracy City, which happens to be made up entirely of lesbians and self-proclaimed perimenopausal Riot Grrrls. They’ll be performing at “Queers of Noise,” along with a slew of other queer artists. Triple Creme, a queercore quartet, has been disbanded since 2008, but this year they’re making a comeback, and “Queers of Noise” attendees will get to witness the return of their rhythmic, machine-like dark pop. Also on the roster are Sarah Greenwood fronted GSX, who GoMag describes as leading “with tough, honest lyrics, sung with soulful grit.” Then there’s THEMME, a new shoegaze band that is, of course, unapologetically queer. -Jade Mosley, BUST Magazine
